TV Stand

Wow, I've been such a slacker lately with this blog. Last week was just one of those weeks when I felt so extremely busy but didn't have anything to show for it. My house was in shambles, our basement half painted, I felt like I was neglecting my friends, and more importantly my children, and I was down right exhausted! I had a melt down late Thursday night feeling overwhelmed and hopeless. I was having a hard time sleeping so I finally got up and cleaned my house for a couple hours (It's amazing what you can accomplish when you don't  have any kid interruptions). Anyway, amid all the cleaning I thought of a quote I recently read: "Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, 'I'll try again tomorrow'" -Thomas S. Monson. The next day I woke up with a clear head and with more determination to try harder to focus on the things that really mattered.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one that has these types of meltdowns??. But any confirmation would be appreciated.

Well, I'm sure you'd love to hear me go on, but instead I thought I'd write about the TV stand that I made for our living room.

I used plans from Ana-White.com. This is a knock-off of Pottery Barn's Logan collection. You can find the building plans here.

I followed the instructions to a T. But if I were to do it over again I'd do it a little different. I'll explain in a bit. First, here are a few pictures of the finished product. I used all MDF boards except for the face pieces where I used pine.

I found the hardware at Lowe's.
I used Behr paint in satin finish, color-matched in Rust-Oleum's Heirloom White.

So here is where I would make a change.  The picture below looks fine, right?

Wrong! See this nice crack going across part of the top?? The plans have you attach a 1 x 2" pine board for the lip. But the wood has separated a bit (probably from my kids hanging on it) so I need to re-caulk and paint this crack on the top. If I were to do it over again, I would have extended the width of the MDF board and made the top one seamless piece.

Other than that, I love the TV stand and can't wait to build the other pieces that go with it.

  1. I showed my sister your blog on Friday and she said, "Ask her to post about a TV stand". She has wanted a white one in her new home. I told her I would talk with you. Once again you did it before I even asked. :) BTW it is beautiful as is the rest of your home.
I am so sorry you had a hard week. Miss you!

    1. Thanks Erica!! This week has been SO much better.

If you wanted to build furniture you could definitely do it. Ana-White's website makes it so doable even with few tools.

  5. Kristi, IF there's a woman alive that doesn't have meltdowns once in awhile, I'd sure like to meet her!!!! So know that you're in great company, we've all had those incredibly hard days, weeks, and sometimes months! Keep your chin up and look toward the future of many wonderful things to come your way.

  7. Hey Kristi- I've definitely felt that way before too! I loved your quote. My Mom loved your house, she totally came around to grey walls, it was awesome. Thanks for letting us come over for a few minutes!

  8. I build cabinets and furniture. You built it correctly. Usea generous amount of wood glue at the joint between the face frame and top during assembly. If you have a good fit the glue will ooze out as you fasten. Wipe excess up with a damp sponge and sand when dry. You can even drill some shallow holes in the glue sufaces to create little "gle dowels". The joint will be stronger than either the pine or MDF alone.
